Wolfsburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach predictions- After a lengthy unbeaten run under new-boss Martin Schmidt (W2 D7), over which Wolfsburg took impressive points against Bayern Munich (a 2-2 draw), Bayer Leverkusen (another 2-2 draw), and TSG Hoffenheim (a 1-1 draw), the streak came to an end with a 2-1 defeat on the road to Augsburg last weekend. Schmidt has said that his main aim for this Sunday is “to not get beaten for a second time in succession”, but he’ll have a hard time making that happen against an in form Borussia Monchengladbach. The Wolves have a few notable injury concerns (see team news) while Maximilian Arnold – who arguably cost them the game against Augsburg – is suspended.
Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking returns to where he was in charge between 2012 and 2016. While his last match there saw his men held to a 1-1 draw and stumble in search of a place in Europe, this time around, he travels with confidence following a 2-1 win at home to league leaders Bayern Munich. Hecking’s side have fully redeemed themselves after recent humiliating 6-1 and 5-1 defeats against Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, and with their offensive performances improving week-by-week, Gladbach must be looking to strengthen their top 4 position on Sunday.
Wolfsburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach predictions
From a betting perspective, despite Wolfsburg’s dominance over Gladbach at the Volkswagen Arena in recent years, the visitors look simply too reasonable a price to say no to. Gladbach are peaking in form for the season – you can’t do much better than beating the reigning champions – and in fact have won all but two of their last eight competitive outings (W6 D1 L1). Meanwhile, the host’s unbeaten run, though impressive, was largely made up of draws, a risk that looks to be eliminated when backing the visitors “draw no bet”.
In terms of who scores the goals, it’s Gladbach’s young Belgian, Thorgan Hazard, who is the man in form. Hazard has been directly involved in ten goals over his last ten league appearances, finding the back of the net himself in three of Gladbach’s last four league outings. As he’s also the designated spot kick taker, taking and scoring all four in the 2017/18 season, backing him to score anytime should also be worth a punt.
With Gladbach as the most in-form side in the Bundesliga over the last four matches – in fact, their three consecutive win streak on the road is their best run since 1994/95 – there’s no better time for them to get over the 12 match run at the Volkswagen Arena without a win (see head-to-head). Wolfsburg have proven more effective going forward than at the back under coach Schmidt though, and this certainly shows. Both teams have scored in all of their matches under his guidance, so we like the odds on that to happen again this weekend. Our prediction: a 2-1 Borussia Monchengladbach win.
