Southampton continued their progress in the FA Cup at the weekend with a tight 1-0 win over Watford, extending their unbeaten streak to four games in all competitions and adding a small element of hope into an otherwise dismal season for The Saints.
The hosts’ Premier League performances have been far from impressive though. They haven’t won a game in the league since November, drawing five and losing five of their ten matches since then.
As it has been all season, Southampton’s issue is their complete lack of attacking threat, a situation made even worse by the absence of the injured Charlie Austin. They have scored just 24 league goals this season, and with their defence remaining fairly respectable, that has resulted in eight of their 13 home games seeing fewer than three goals.
Brighton are in a similar situation to their opponents. They are two positions above Southampton in the table with just one more point, and whilst they also progressed in the FA Cup at the weekend, they are winless in five Premier League matches.
The Seagulls festive win over Watford is their only victory in the last 13 league matches, and away from home they have won just twice all season. Again, just like their opponents, it’s been their goal-scoring form that has let them down on the road. They have only scored five away goals all season, resulting in ten of their 12 matches seeing fewer than three goals.
Considering both teams’ are having issues going forward, we’re backing Under 2.5 Goals here. Southampton have drawn three of their last five home league games as well, so we’re opting for another stalemate here along with a 0-0 correct score predictions.
