The Friday and Monday games in La Liga are rarely glamour fixtures and this is another that most neutrals will struggle to get excited by. It is though a big game, particularly for Malaga, who are now in desperate trouble and could really do with 3 points here as they bid to beat the drop.
They were beaten 1-0 at home by an Espanyol side who hadn’t previously won away on Monday night. That result really ramped up the pressure on Malaga coach Michel, who will do well to keep his job for much longer. We will be at the halfway stage in the season after this round of fixtures and if Malaga don’t add to their tally of 11 points here, they will have an absolute mountain to climb in terms of hauling themselves to safety.
The fans had largely stuck with the team but even that started to change on Monday, with audible discontent at times at another lacklustre display. They have sold a long list of key players over the past couple of years without really purchasing adequate replacements, so it’s no great surprise that they’ve fallen back from being talked about as possible European contenders to relegation candidates.
Their away record is miserable, with an 89% defeat ratio on the road in La Liga this term. That doesn’t bode well here as they prepare to take on a disciplined Getafe side that should have the edge on the side from the Costa del Sol.
Girona have taken many of the plaudits as the surprise package of the season but fellow new boys Getafe deserve plenty of credit too. They are a physical side but with a sprinkling of quality and they will move as high as 8th if they can pick up maximum points here.
They’ve been strong at home with a 56% win ratio in front of their own fans. When you consider they’ve already hosted 6 of the current top 7, that is a truly excellent record. They’ve let in just 0.78 goals at home with an impressive 44% clean sheet ratio. Given Malaga have lost a huge 78% of their away games to nil, backing Getafe to Win to Nil looks to offer value here.
If you don’t want to take any chances with that, going for Getafe to Win also looks good. They’ve far outperformed Malaga this season, with better records at both ends of the pitch and with home advantage will be confident of adding to their opponents woes.
