Atletico Madrid were group favourites for the top spot when they were drawn in the summer, with Chelsea, Roma, and Qarabag promising tough opposition but the Champions League specialists from Spain expected to overcome the trio.
Things haven’t turned out that way at all though, and halfway through the group stages they find themselves without a single win to their name. They are three points adrift of 2nd placed Roma and five behind Chelsea, and unless they up their game soon, there is a very real chance of them missing out on the knockout stages.
Atletico Madrid opened the campaign with a goalless draw at Roma before losing at home to Chelsea, and then another goalless draw away to Qarabag followed to leave Diego Simeone’s men in dire straits. Their domestic form isn’t much better either, so it’s a struggle on all fronts for the hosts.
They drew at home to Villarreal on Saturdya to make it one win, five draws, and one defeat from their last seven games. Admittedly there have been a few tough games in this run and at home they will feel confident of getting the win, but looking at their recent performances, it’s unlikely to be a landslide victory.
Qarabag have actually put in a few really good showings this season, one of which was their draw against Atletico Madrid. They were hammered at Chelsea, but their 2-1 loss at home to Roma is nothing to be ashamed of really and they can be happy with how the campaign has gone.
In fairness to them they are always competitive in Europe. This is their first Champions League campaign, but recent years have seen them frequent the Europa League group stages and they are rarely beaten heavily there. In the Champions League they have lost just one of their matches by more than a two goal margin, with that being the 6-0 defeat at Chelsea earlier this season.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, haven’t won by three or more goals in any of their home matches this season, and despite their Champions League speciality, they haven’t won by a three goal margin since 2015 in the competition. This makes backing Qarabag +2.5 Asian Handicap look a great choice of bets. In the end we do expect the hosts to come away with the points, so we’re also going for Atletico Madrid to Win and Under 2.5 Goals along with a 2-0 correct score predictions.
